In a speech to a VincentCare Victoria staff conference on 30 May 2013, Executive Director Denis Fitzgerald refected on the challenge of presenting the positive message of the Gospel at a time when so many are repulsed by the revelations of sexual abuse and cover up:  it is our fruits that will determine whether we have been true to our mission, and deserve the respect and the cooperation of staff and of society.

In short, which the proportion of people in the population that identify as Catholics remains strong (at 25%), a decreasing proportion of those regularly attend Mass (13% of Catholics attend weekly Mass); and the composition of Mass attenders is changing by age and by ethnicity - 41% of them were born overseas.

There was much more to discuss than the limits of the Breakfast Briefing allowed for.
The 2013 Victorian Budget caters to the comfortable majority, with significant effort applied to infrastructure planning and expenditure.  But it has insufficient focus on the the needs of those who are most vulnerable and disadvantaged, according to Denis Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Catholic Social Services Victoria.
