Parishes as Centres of Service
Can you help pay for a room at the inn this Christmas?

Amid the joyous celebrations of Advent and Christmas this year, let us remember that Jesus came into the world “with nowhere to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). His parents finally found a place in Bethlehem where Mary could give birth to Jesus. “She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).

In September this year the Australian Catholic Bishops presented their 2018-19 Social Justice Statement, A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land. They pointed to the alarming growth in homelessness and the high cost of accommodation with its links to domestic violence, mental health issues, its impact on vulnerable groups including the elderly, Indigenous people, people released from prison and the unemployed. Please read the statement to see what you and your parish can do to assist.

In July this year the Federal Government began withdrawing the restricted living allowance (Status Resolution Support Payment) it had been paying to people seeking asylum. With this safety net removed, thousands of people are facing destitution and homelessness. This is placing unprecedented demand on agencies such as Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP) who support them with accommodation and financial support. Can you make a donation to BASP this Christmas to help provide accommodation and support to destitute people?

During their daily home visits, Vinnies volunteers see and respond to the levers that all too often lead to homelessness, such as rent, utility stress, lack of food, or the cost of education. They don’t just provide food vouchers, furniture, payment of bills and more, they offer something intangible and priceless – a listening ear and genuine friendship. Can you give to Vinnies this Christmas, to help bring joy to those in need?
