Deaf interpreting services used as part of weekly Cathedral Mass
The John Pierce Centre (JPC) has been partnering with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne since April 2020, throughout the Victorian lockdown and now into 2021, to provide Auslan Interpreters for their weekly televised Mass service at St Patrick’s Cathedral. JPC has recently evolved to provide Deaf Interpreters for these services. To have the Eucharist interpreted by Deaf Interpreters means that the Deaf person watching, receives the information in their own language from someone who shares their lived experience and their cultural and linguistic connections.
JPC also has a mass once a month and Deaf community members come from all over greater Melbourne to attend. The Mass has full Auslan (Australian Sign Language) access with Deaf Interpreters, as well as Deaf Readers to sign the readings. JPC is the only Catholic Centre in Victoria that provides Deaf lead faith and Deaf Interpreters for Mass.
“To have access to my faith in Auslan means everything to me.” - from a deaf community member.
