John Pierce Centre supporting deaf community online during COVID

Carmel Phillips, Executive Manager of the John Pierce Centre (JPC) has provided a July 2020 update for the deaf community, which outlines closures due to COVID, and a number of online faith, prayer and reflection video resources

“It continues to be a challenging time for everyone and we hope you are looking after yourselves, families and each other. There are concerns around the spiking of coronavirus covid-19 around Victoria," says Carmel.

“I want to give an update about JPC. For now and this term, JPC continues to be closed and no community groups happening here. We know many people wish to have contact in our centre but it is not possible at this time. We will continue to provide support online on email for group engagement.

“If you require personal one on one support please contact us and our pastoral care team will assist you. The JPC Annual General Meeting was postponed from April and was held on 15 July online via zoom video.

“We are making some changes to providing faith reflections online as we move forward. We hope you have enjoyed the past weeks watching Katrina and Gail sign the reflections and gospel readings provided by Fr John and Fr Wayne. Now we are adjusting this moving forward. We aim to provide a prayer/reflection once at the start of each month. Then on the third Sunday of July we will have the JPC mass videoed. You can’t come to JPC but you can watch Fr Wayne provide Mass online from your homes. We will give more information about this soon so please check our website and Facebook page for information.

“For July you can still watch mass on tv from St Patrick’s Church or streamed online. This will likely in the future reduce as we do more video Mass at JPC.

“Lastly, this year is the 40 year celebration of JPC and we still plan to have celebration, though not in August as originally planned. For now we plan to have the event on December 13. It will include a Mass and then a lunch. This merges with our usual Christmas Rally, so we will have one event. It will be held at a special venue and we will give you more information as we get closer so please Save the Date! Please stay safe and keep well. We miss you all and thanks.”
