Homelessness Forum 8 June 2019 - Actions we can take

At the Parish Forum on Saturday, 8 June 2019, more than 50 participants heard from excellent speakers and discussed why homelessness is an issue for all of us and what we can do about it. The parable of the Good Samaritan causes us all to pause in our journey and consider the needs of our neighbour: what can we do to assist our brothers and sisters on the margins, particularly those who are facing housing difficulties and homelessness?

Father Joe Caddy reflected on this parable and the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement 2018-19 – A Place to Call Home. Participants heard about inspirational grass roots action occurring in Seaford and Maroondah.

Sr Bernadette Keating guided a reflection on the opportunity to work for practical action. The group reflected on their own feelings about homelessness, what they would like to see happen and what action each could take to do something positive to address the homelessness issues they come across.
We learned there are many small and large scale activities and programs that are happening across Melbourne. Collaborative communities can provide temporary solutions to help homeless people survive. Governments, the Church and other groups can do more to address housing and homelessness issues, but action also needs to come from the bottom up: us, our family and friends, our parish and our networks. Change starts with us. Download document on Actions we can take.
