SPC Forum - Bernie Geary OAM - Thursday 30 August 7.30 - 9.00pm
Is Victoria still a ‘dreadful parent’ for the hundreds of children in state care or confinement? Bernie Geary OAM has been involved with children and young people for most of his life. He was Victoria’s first Child Safety Commissioner from 2005, and was then appointed Victorian Commissioner for Children & Young People from 2013 until late 2015.
He returned to the Youth Parole Board, and also sits on the Mental Health Tribunal. The first youth outreach worker in Victoria, Mr Geary worked for many years with young families and disadvantaged youth in West Heidelberg. He spent 17 years at Jesuit Social Services, managed the Brosnan Centre. He was CEO of JSS from 2001-2005, and was a member of the Premier’s Drug Advisory Councils in 1999 and 2001, the Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council, and the Victorian Children’s Council. On finishing his term as Commissioner in 2015, Mr Geary said Victoria is "a dreadful parent" who doesn't pay enough attention to how it treats the hundreds of vulnerable children in state care.
