Helping our Refugee Families, Forum for Parishes - 25 August
As part of our Welcome the Asylum Seeker Parish Support Program
, Catholic Social Services Victoria is hosting a forum for parishes, 'Helping our Refugee Families and Friends' on Saturday 25 August, at the Cardinal Knox Centre, 383 Albert Street, East Melbourne, from 9.30am - 1.00pm.
The forum will bring together asylum seekers, parish leaders with a variety of experiences supporting refugee families, clergy, Catholic support agency leaders together with parishioners, experienced and not so experienced, in providing support.
"The morning will be an interactive occasion between speakers and participants, with emphasis on how to take up the many opportunities we have to reach out to refugee families and friends," says Adrian Foley of Welcome the Asylum Seeker Parish Support Program.
"We will also hear from Phil Glendenning AM, Director Edmund Rice Centre who has recently returned from Afghanistan regarding his experience, and his focus on advocating for asylum seekers and refugees at the national level.
"The need for support is great, with financial support for many asylum seekers currently being withdrawn by the government. Attendees are encouraged to invite friends from their own and other parishes, to help extend the network of support as wide as possible.
"We hope that by attending this forum, parish representatives will feel enthused and empowered to contribute more, and that we can create a stronger network to sustain and support initiatives and advocacy for refugees and people seeking asylum." Click here
