First Workshop for Catholic Social Teaching Train The Trainer 2017
On Thursday 13 July 2017 CSSV presented the first Train The Trainer workshop in Catholic Social Teaching for 2017 at Edmund Rice Centre, Lower Plenty. The main objective of these Train The Trainer workshops is in response to CSSV member organisations to assist and facilitate in-house training in Catholic Social Teaching in an adult learning environment. This workshop was co-facilitated by Peter Hay (Edmund Rice Oceania), Sr Bernadette Keating (Presentation Sisters) and Peter Hudson (CSSV). There were nine participants for the workshop from across five CSSV member organisations and two other colleagues from the wider sector.
The workshop had a strong experiential, reflective element throughout and began with a river walk connecting the themes of integral ecology and interdependence of all creation from Laudato Si. A few of the core principles of Catholic Social Teaching were engaged with through group work and personal reflective activities. Initial CSSV web-based resources were also presented and discussed.
The workshop attempted to model adult learning methods throughout the day and feedback from participants appreciated the diversity and creativity of the workshop delivery. One participant stated: “Every activity challenged you to get out of your comfort zone and to interact rather than listen”. Also: “It opens up new dimensions and perceptions given the range of agencies involved.” Other participant comments were: “so inviting and informative – inspiring – and a day for listening and learning.” “reminder to me and you of the importance of ‘space’ for reflection.”
There is another Catholic Social Teaching Train The Trainer workshop scheduled for Tuesday 28 November 2017 at St Joseph’s By The Sea Williamstown – so we can expect a different walk! This day will be another reflective, interactive presentation of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and a valuable opportunity to pause and review towards the end of another working year.
