Asylum Seekers Support
Ombudsman to review human rights of immigration detainees in Australia
Fair and supportive treatment for people in detention centres is an expectation of the Australian community, including the Catholic community. Our member organisations in Catholic Social Services Victoria support people seeking asylum and have intimate experience and connections with the residents and the operations of detention centres.
Mr Peter Dutton, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, remains unresponsive to our call that detention centres safeguard the dignity, wellbeing and personal security of their residents. Click
for our letter; and
for the response from Australia Border Force.
A subsequent referral to the Ombudsman has resulted in their
deciding to investigate
our concerns about human rights.
