Becoming a Culturally Competent Organisation Workshop
Catholic Social Services Victoria, in collaboration with Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, engaged Melissa Brickell, a Yorta Yorta Wiradjeri woman, to facilitate an informative and challenging workshop entitled Becoming a Culturally Competent Organisation for CSSV member organisations and other colleagues on Friday morning 7 August 2015.
Twelve people gathered at CSSV East Melbourne for a morning of lively discussion and rich resourcing in the whole area of cultivating culturally safe environments in our workspaces. It was about affirming those involved in Catholic social services to more empathetically and respectfully engage with Aboriginal communities.
Melissa stressed that this is about developing shared respect, knowledge and understandings across cultures which empowers people and enables them to contribute and feel safe to be themselves in their relationships with others. This workshop is another positive step towards cultural proficiency in Catholic social service environments. Melissa offered a diverse and relevant package of resources to assist participants in bringing the messages back to their own workplaces.
