Striving to build the Kingdom in a time of crisis
In a speech to a VincentCare Victoria staff conference on 30 May 2013, Executive Director Denis Fitzgerald refected on the challenge of presenting the positive message of the Gospel at a time when so many are repulsed by the revelations of sexual abuse and cover up.
It is important to discuss these issues, hard as it is to confront a litany of suffering and of evil. We need to enage with it, in order to enable us to respond effectively.
For individual Christians, there is an imperative to continue to renew our response to the call of the Gospel, to provide loving service such that you can tell that there is something different happening, just from walking into the room. There is also a call to make our appropriate contribution as part of the Church to ensuring the best possible prevention, and response to the harm and the suffering that has been done by our Church.
The Gospels, Catholic Social Teaching, the spirit of Fredrick Ozanam – these are central, in the inspiration and direction that they give. They need to be nurtured, and we need to be formed in them. We need this so that we can better work with those at the margin and work to ameliorate injustices. These are the fruits that will determine whether we have been true to our mission, and deserve the respect and the cooperation of staff and of society.
