Competition and efficiently working markets have their role to play, but collaboration not competition, mission not markets should be the drivers of social service delivery in the 21st century, according to a recent article by Denis Fitzgerald from Catholic Social Services Victoria.  Related to this, faith-based bodies can only achieve their potential in service and advocacy and be true to their prophetic calling if they also develop and advance a new vision of a society that would be informed by the needs of all.

Thirty five people gathered at Cardinal Knox Centre on Saturday 18 March 2017 to reflect upon what parishes can do to support asylum seekers and refugees as part of the Strengthening Parish Support for Asylum Seekers and Refugees forum. Key speakers included Phil Glendenning AM, President of the Refugee Council of Australia and Director of the Edmund Rice Centre; Fr Peter Carrucan, a ‘Good Samaritan’ to refugees for many years; and Terefe Aborete a refugee from Ethiopia in 1995.

The Mission Inspired Leadership 2017 series with Catholic Social Services Victoria in East Melbourne began on Thursday 16 March. The opening facilitator for the first evening was Mr Graham West, National President of the St Vincent de Paul Society Australia. Graham led the group of fifteen participants in an engaging and challenging discussion around Leadership Practice in a Catholic Context.

“We are instruments of hope,” proclaimed Bishop Patrick O’Regan of Sale, at the commencement of the Commissioning and Blessing Mass for Catholic Social Services Victoria.
 
About 60 representatives from member organisations of Catholic Social Services Victoria gathered at MacKillop Family Services in South Melbourne today, to attend the annual gathering.
