Congratulations to all who received Australia Day awards on Thursday 26 January. In a particular way though, Catholic Social Services Victoria congratulates Sr Mary O’Shannassy SGS, Director of Catholic Prison Ministry Victoria, Norm Banner, former chair of Southern Cross Care, Phil Glendenning, a great contributor on the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and Vinnies Victoria volunteers, Ken Wilson and John O’Laughlin, along with the conference members in Rochester who have received Australia Day honours for their contributions to those in need.
Vale Fr Joe McMahon, who died at St Vincent’s Private Hospital on Friday 20 January, aged 80 years. He was a true champion of justice, and an inspirational chaplain in youth justice, particularly in his care for each person and working with young people to help build a pathway to adult life.

Many of us in Catholic social services, including many leaders and his nephew Fr Joe Caddy, looked up to Fr Joe as a model and an inspiration. Through the impact he has had on so many, we are all in his debt. He is now at peace.
We need to focus on the availability of safe, affordable and secure housing, rather than vilify people who don’t have adequate access to housing. Many of these people need a safe, affordable home in a friendly community, and some need decent regular work. Others need specialist attention. We are not talking about rubbish that needs to be 'cleaned out'.

But comment and media coverage of rough sleepers in Melbourne has tended to focus on the short term. Victorian homelessness, housing and social services organisations have responded.

The key to a safer society is to address the root causes of crime , according to our recent media statement on criminal justice policy. Further, “when offences are committed, a focus on restoration for all parties, and on rehabilitation, must be central to our response”. Download our Media Release.
