“We are instruments of hope,” proclaimed Bishop Patrick O’Regan of Sale, at the commencement of the Commissioning and Blessing Mass for Catholic Social Services Victoria.
 
About 60 representatives from member organisations of Catholic Social Services Victoria gathered at MacKillop Family Services in South Melbourne today, to attend the annual gathering.
 
 
People seeking asylum continue to need our support. Many thousands in the community and in detention are living in Australia in fear, poverty and uncertainty.  Many more are detained on Nauru and Manus Island, with others “free”, with nowhere to go. Self harm, suicide and death are common. Recent humanitarian family arrivals from Syria need our support. The forum will increase awareness of current issues and what parishes can do to help.
Yesterday the Victorian Government announced a $2.1 billion social housing package, which includes a $1 billion loan guarantee program, a $100 million revolving loan facility for low-interest loans and $3 million to faciliate the management transfer of 4,000 public housing properties to the community housing sector. Applauding this announcement, the Council to Homeless Persons has released a comprehensive breakdown of the funding, with all of the details provided here.
Better outcomes for people who are disadvantaged; a resilient Catholic Social Services sector that responds effectively to its changing environment; Catholic Social Teaching making a difference; prevention and response to child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church and organisations; and effective communication and engagement with Church and communities are among the priorities laid out in the Catholic Social Services Victoria's Council strategic plan for 2017-2019, which was recently finalised.
