Some human services have been subject to competitive tendering, and that experience has been very mixed.  Governments have also developed market structures that provide for user choice in, for example, disability services.  But the goal in human services is human flourishing, which has an individual and a communal dimension.  Lessons need to be learned from experience, and competition should only be fostered after careful consideration of each case.

As part of Anti-Poverty Week, 16-22 October, St Vincent de Paul Society will be hosting an event on ‘The Meaning of Poverty’. Dr John Falzon, National CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society, will lead a conversation with panelists Denis Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Catholic Social Services Victoria; Lucy Adams, Manager of Homeless Law at Justice Connect and Sue Cattermole, CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria.

CSSV attended the recent Victoria Police Chief Commissioner’s Youth Summit at the MCG on 21 July 2016. Over two hundred civic and welfare leaders attended this forum to discuss and address young people’s involvement in serious and violent crime and the trends in youth victimisation. It was particularly helpful and informative that a diverse group of young people were in attendance and made valuable contributions both personally and culturally to the discussion.
